2010 David Jones Cup Field, Barriers & Betting Tips

October 14th, 2010

This Saturday Caulfield Cup Day will light up the Caulfield track with 10 quality races scheduled including the 2010 David Jones Cup.

The $125,000 Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) has drawn a capacity field of 16 stayers plus three emergencies and will be a hotly contested affair as it provides an excellent lead-up run for lower-rated entries heading towards the 2011 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 1.

A number of gallopers in the David Jones Cup on Saturday are fighting for a spot in the Melbourne Cup field, needing to move up the order of entry to come into contention for the world’s richest handicap.

Leading the David Jones entries is C’est La Guerre, the Lloyd Williams-owned six-year-old who broke a lengthy winning drought with a victory in the Craven Plate at Randwick last start.

Currently C’est La Guerre is 18th on the Melbourne Cup order of entry, set to start in the famous Flemington feature he placed third in two years ago, trainer Robert Hickmott using the David Jones Cup as a trial for the Melbourne Cup.

Drawn midfield in barrier seven for Saturday and set to carry top weight of 57 kilos, which is a drop down by two kilos from his Craven Plate win, C’est La Guerre will likely start as one of the favourites for the David Jones Cup.

Gallopers further down the Melbourne Cup ballot that need a win on Saturday include Kiwi gelding Red Ruler (27th), Stanstill (50th) Luca Cumani’s European mare Becqu Adoree (48th) making her Australian race debut in the David Jones Cup, and the Bart Cummings-trained Empire’s Choice (59th) who is unlikely to make the Melbourne Cup field this year yet to pass the first elimination clause.

One of our favourites to win on Saturday is Rainbow Styling who won the Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield last month before finishing a gallant second to Precedence in the JRA Cup at Moonee Valley last start.

Rainbow Styling will start from barrier nine due to be ridden by Chris Munce, well positioned to cause an upset so check out their odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Our favourite runner in the David Jones Cup to finish in the money and that looks the best Place bet is Peter Snowden’s consistent mare Purple, so try adding her into a Trifecta with Rainbow Styling and C’est La Guerre.

The 2010 David Jones Cup is programmed as Race 7 at Caulfield on Saturday and is set to start at 3:20pm (AEDST), one race before the highlight event, the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).
