October 13th, 2011

The 2011 David Jones Cup form guide shows that the 2000m Group 3 feature is a really good side event to the main event Caulfield Cup.

With 14 horses all boasting prize money of close enough to $100,000 or over it’s going to be a hotly contested race and the winner could just about come from anywhere.

With that in mind we look below to the 2011 David Jones Cup form guide and see just how tight it is.

2011 David Jones Cup Form Guide

Booming (7)

New Zealand horse having its first start in Australia.  Boasts a record of two wins and three minors from six starts over the trip, will be well suited to the ground and has no problems with the 57kg. D Dunn has a real winning chance on his hands.

Foreteller (11)

Seventh in the Epsom and now makes a rare trip out to the 2000m. Did win the Premier’s Cup Prelude over 1800m though so he’s not without hope here. C Brown to ride.

Red Colossus (12)

Impressive sixth in the Epsom and will likely improve with the step out to 2000m. Was long in the betting before last start, expect him to be much shorter here. C Symons to ride.

Paddy O’Reilly (2)

Second in the Cranbourne Cup gives a good read on form even if this is a step up in grade. That being said it’s probably not as big a step as you might think, especially for a horse that’s only missed the money once in five goes at the trip.

Extra Zero (1)

Don’t know what happened when he finished second last in the Turnbull, before that he was impressive over 1700m at Caulfield. He finds that form again he’s a chance, if not he’s no hope. C Williams to ride.

Hissing Sid (5)

Struggled in the Bart Cummings but the drop back in both grade and in distance could help him out. Another that’s only missed the money once in five goes at the trip and he’s won twice at Caulfield. S King to ride.

Lucky Eighty Eight (6)

Will ride here if he doesn’t get a start in the Caulfield Cup as 2nd emergency. Ninth in the Herbert Power over 2400m but third in the Naturalism over 2000m. He finds that form he probably wins. M Payne to ride.

Platinum Passion (14)

Incredible run last start to lead all the way over 2000m, beat Shewan in the process which went on to win the Herbert Power Stakes. That gives you some clear positive form, barrier maybe a problem though. Kerrin McEvoy to ride.

Base (4)

Promised a lot this horse but yet to find that big win. Fourth in the Balaklava Cup after running near the back in a nothing race at the Valley first up. Needs to lift but the distance will suit, as will track conditions.

Midnight Martini (3)

Another that will run here assuming she doesn’t get into the Caulfield Cup where she’s 4th emergency.  Was fourth in the Herbert Power after winning a Bm89, one from one at the trip, can win here.

Pacino (10)

Just ran last at Cranbourne so would be very surprised if it started, if it does don’t back in anyway.

Testas Double (13)

Nice win in the lower grades at Moonee Valley last start and gets up to a trip that really suits. This is a jump in grade no doubt but if he can have some luck from the barrier C Newitt could make himself a winner.

Almodovar (9)

Fourth in the provincials last start over 1600m but has won at Caulfield over 2000m as a three year old. He actually went back to back at Caulfield earlier this year so expect him to be running on late. L Nolen to ride.

Ulundi (8)

Won at Mornington over 2013m last start and won at Flemington over 2000m earlier in the year. Another horse with genuine claims and rounds out a very hard race to pick. G Schofield to ride.
