Contributer has taken out the 2014 David Jones Cup in stunning style at Caulfield Racecourse this afternoon.
In second place was Noble Protector, followed by Signoff. Honorius came into fourth place.
Noble Protector was slow from the barriers, as was Contributer, but that wasn’t going to have a poor impact on their performance in the 2000m handicap.
Craig Williams quickly took Noble Protector to the front while James McDonald found a place for Contributer around fourth.
Craig Newitt settled Vilanova at the rear of the field, with Midsummer Sun not far away.
In early stages Noble Protector and Jacquinot Bay fought for the lead, with Honorius and Commanding Time not far behind.
As the race progressed Noble Protector and Commanding Time made their move around the outside, with Jacquinot Bay on the rails.
It was a thrilling finish, with most of the leaders staying amongst it for the entire 2000m.
Brambles was a notable scratching from the David Jones Cup on Thursday morning following Gris Caro‘s removal from the Caulfield Cup field. As first emergency, Brambles slotted right into the Group 1 feature event to race from barrier 11. The 6 year old gelding had previously held barrier 5 in the David Jones Cup.
Heading into the race this morning there were no blatant outsiders in the betting. Jacquinot Bay and Pinstripe Lane were somewhat less favoured by punters, but still came in at around $31 at Ladbrokes.com.au. Robert Smerdon‘s five year old mare Noble Protector fought a battle for favouritism with Darren Weir‘s five year old gelding Signoff, both hovering either side of the $4 mark.
David Hayes has already expressed his desire to send Jacquinot Bay to the Mackinnon Stakes, so it will be interesting to see if that is still the plan.
